Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2000, Clos des Lambrays

The Clos des Lambrays grand cru is a monopoly vineyard which has been making significant quality improvements since the late 1990s. The grand cru is aged for 18 months in 50% new oak barrels. The 2000 has a cherry red colour with some browning. Beguiling, intense and heady aromas of crushed cassis, raspberry liqueur, plum and oak. Savoury palate with slightly stewed red berry fruit yet an underlying freshness persists. Fat berry longueur on the back palate supported by medium acidity. A point of tannin remains on the finish. This 2000 already has the evolution to enjoy a broad spectrum of aromas and an integrated texture. At its peak from now for another 2 years. Very interesting.

Clos des Lambrays is not a monopole grand cru. It is infact shared between the Domaine des Lambrays (who own the vast majority of the vines) and Domaine Taupenot-Merme (of Morey St Denis).
Roman Taupenot, owner & winemaker at his family's domaine, is a lovely bloke who seems to have a sense of humour about the fact that everyone thinks the pride of his domaine is wholly owned by Dom lambrays.
Incidently, i tasted the '06 Clos des Lambrays from Taupenot-Merme during the 2006 en primeur tastings in London, and is was showing very well indeed.

  2. Ben, thanks for pointing out my error. I look forward to trying the Taupenot-Merme Clos des Lambrays as well as their other wines which seem to have a good reputation. Two is always better than one! Regards, Dr Burgundy.
