Beaune 1er Cru "Les Cents Vignes" 2007, Château de la Velle

After visiting the Château de la Velle in July this was the first opportunity to crack open a bottle of the Cents Vignes. Dr Burgundy was not disappointed. Lovely, engaging deep cherry colour. Soft aromas of plum, cherry, strawberry coulis, vanilla. Deep and ripe. A brunette in a purple velvet dress. Mind-blowingly delicious red stone and summer berry fruits flavours running the gamut from juicy raspberry to drop-from-the-tree plum. Excellent underlying structure from fresh tannins and a line of acidity. This is a wonderful wine and illustrates the value of ancient pinot clones. Sumptuous. A perfect match for some saucy Maupassant contes like La Rouille or Marroca. Photo shows some pinot grapes on the Pommard/Beaune border on August 9, 2010.
