Monthélie 1999, Château de Monthélie

Tasted in the appealingly-large magnum format this Monthélie pinot (there is very little chardonnay planted in Monthélie) has a stupendous, thich, deep plum sauce colour. If it were a book, it would be a dark and urgent thriller. Heavy aromas of plum, blackberry, nutmeg, black pepper and licorice thrill the senses. Blackberry, apple and black cherry flavours swamp the palate, with superb ripe tannins and an eaux de vie finish. This Monthélie is outstanding. Why? One of the top producers in the village, one of the best vintages for pinot and the extra vim from the magnum. This wine can be kept for another 2 years but is perfect now.
