Bâtard-Montrachet 2005, René Lequin-Colin

My long-time partner in tasting Peter was showing a lot of moxie at lunch and wanted to try a bottle of Bâtard. Who would stand in his way? Not I. Nor the sommelier. Tasted in the worryingly small half-bottle format this Bâtard-Montrachet 2005 from René Lequin-Colin was stimulating, showed its class but didn't have a wow factor. Initially closed on the nose, a gentle hint of mint. Dominant aromas, but still restrained, of citrus. Vanilla and hazelnut from the new oak. Needs at least 5 more years to open. Quality shows through on the palate: mineral, rounded lemon fruit, pear, cherry juice. Really multi-layered with a mineral finish. Serious in 2010 but will show off in 2015.
