Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" 2009, Marquis d'Angerville

Champans is lower down the Volnay slope on the Meursault side of the village. The soil is heavier with more clay and iron. The bouquet of this Volnay-Champans 2009 is high-toned: fresh not-quite-ripe strawberry and tangerine. Quartz, mineral, fresh, lively, ripe. Imaging a glass full of crushed pinot grapes and sparkling diamonds. The terroir characteristics shine through. A much more feminine Volnay. I imagine it will be wonderfully complex in 7 years time. Photo shows vineyard workers pruning Champans vines in July 2010. Tasted courtesy of the Corney & Barrow Burgundy 2009 tasting.
