Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Orveaux" 2002, Mongéard Mugneret

This domaine has an impressive range of wines mostly from the Côtes de Nuits. Initial mineral nose, blood orange, solid berry aromas. Medium to high acidity, tight structure, raspberry, red currant, plums. Fresh, tannic possibly a touch green. Confirms my méfiance about the supposedly excellent 2002 vintage. Big structures without enough fruit to round the sensation. The aromas were more interesting when I tasted the same wine in March 2010. Suggests this has already peaked. Apart from stellar domaines that produce very concentrated wines, the village or junior premier cru pinots should be consumed in the first 5-9 years.
