Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" 2009, Domaine des Comtes Lafon

The nose on this Volnay-Champans, tasted at the domaine, is immediately striking with deep medicinal herb aromas which concentrate in plumes of reniflable aromas. Layers of ripe red berry and fresh black berry and blue berry fruit with quartz sparkiness and chalk umami on the finish. Aged in around one-third new oak this Champans is from a terroir with a light clay (argile) and limestone (calcaire) soil which helps with the balance and enhances complexity. Requires 4 years to develop the broader range of tertiary aromas and integrated, soft fruit one expects from a Volnay. Excellent wine.
