Volnay 1er Cru "Les Champans" 1993, Hubert de Montille

Imbibed during a Burgundy planning dinner at Hardy's in Marylebone (£5 corkage!) this mature Volnay started on marvellous notes of faisandage with elements of beech bark. Having awoken from its 20 year slumber this pinot offered potent black cherry aromas. More impactful on the palate we were honoured by pure, cylindrical pinot fruits held together by good tannins. There's moss and savoury characteristics. Awoke the wild boar in us... and was a perfect companion for pigeon breast. Impressive longevity. We scored a first by smuggling in one of our own cheeses and weren't even charged rindage.
