Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "En Chalumeaux" 2002, Domaine Matrot

I didn't have high hopes of finding a decent wine at a pre-wedding lunch in Cumbria. How wrong I was. We went to The Royal Hotel in Kirkby Lonsdale and were treated to wonderful food as well as a glorious ly well-chosen wine list. This Puligny 1er Cru from the savoury 2002 vintage starts on pear, cooked apples cubes, minerals. Its like walking into a grotto with stalactites. Additional aromas of honeysuckle, indulgent, apple pastry, residual sugar. On the palate there is freshness, attack, underlying minerality, dried apple a dab of lemon on the tip of the tongue and good tannins. Supplied by one of those wonderful regional wine merchants Burns of Clitheroe. Scores 22/30 for a Puligny 1er Cru.
