Saint-Romain "Sous Le Chateau" 2009, Prunier-Bonheur

The commune of Saint-Romain sits at an elevation between 274 and 564 metres with vines being planted right on top of the hill at Saint-Romain Le Haut. This higher elevation can pose problems for the ripeness of pinot noir grapes in lieu-dits that lack southerly or westerly exposition. But in a warm, sunny year like 2009 this should not be an issue. This Saint-Romain rouge proves the point: strawberries, jammy, very ripe, coffee and then the nose falls away. Then this pinot offers croquant berry fruit, griottes, medium-light tannins, freshness and some background oak. A very successful wine that combines a rich, ripe fruit nose with a fresh and age-worthy structure. Scores 24-25 / 30 for a Saint-Romain.
