Volnay 1er Cru "Carelle Sous La Chapelle" 2002, Jean-Marc Boillot

This Volnay premier cru from the respected Domaine J-M Boillot has a dark red, cherry colour. The first nose is typical of the backwards 2002 vintage with plum and oak initially and a slowness to open up. It is definitely a brooding vintage. There is spice, metal and charolais beef. Imbibed this surprisingly stuctured Volnay is a touch harsh, there is cassis, good fruit, some minerality, evolves on a quartet of black fruits. When will the 2002s really open up? Tasted blind this was enjoyed but was not preferred by the team. Scores 23/30 for a Volnay 1er Cru.Worth comparing with the Pommard 1er Cru 2001 and the Volnay 1er Cru 2000 from the same domaine.
