Which way for the best Meursault? I bought a few bottles produced by Jean-Marc Vincent and Laurent Escalier at the suggestion of a wine merchant in the main square of Meursault. Unfortunately I wasn't impressed with their Savigny 2004 blanc I tasted in July. What about their Meursault 1er Cru from the same vintage?
The hue is a vibrant medium yellow with a brassy tinge. Ominously the first nose is dominated by oak... as is the second nose with a potent lemon refrain creeping in. Very direct and clean on the nose but not at all interesting. Thick, chewy and oaky on the palate with entire forests of oak growing over what could have been a mineral wine from this chalky terroir. Finishes on a slightly bizarre salty / oyster flavour. Thicker than their Savigny but essentially the same wine. Just don't see this getting any better. Jacob's Creek anyone?
